The Gold Coast, Australia—it’s like a bustling station where languages and cultures from all over the world intersect every day.
In this space called ‘Yi Dynasty,’ I encounter the joys and sorrows of life alongside guests from every corner of the globe and my young staff members, each from different homelands.
Some days, we meet wonderful guests whose kindness we wish to remember forever.
Other days, we ache from misunderstandings that sprout simply because our cultural backgrounds are different.
With my age and experience, I can weather these waves.
But my heart breaks when I see my young staff members trembling with anxiety after a difficult encounter.
As their boss and as someone who has walked life’s path a bit longer, I feel a sharp pang of sympathy.
It is no one’s fault.
We were simply tossed about by the winds of ‘difference.’
Thinking that it was my own shortcomings as an owner that failed to shield them from the storm, I silently hand a cold glass of beer to these hard-working kids.
I look at the empty plates left behind by a guest who walked away upset.
Not a single side dish, not a single piece of meat remains.
I want to believe those clean plates are the highest praise—a silent way of saying, “The food was delicious,” even when words failed us.
Because I am the owner, it hurts. But because I am the owner, I stand up again.
I wash away today’s bitterness with a cold beer,
And tomorrow, I will welcome my guests and my team with an even wider embrace.
